Michigan recently passed the “Clean Slate” law, which allows for more criminal convictions to be expunged (set aside.) As of April 11, 2021, more misdemeanor and felony convictions are eligible to be set aside. Additionally, the law shortened the time period after a conviction to submit an application for an expungement.

In response to the new law, Oakland County established the Oakland County Clean Slate Program. It offers free expungement assistance for qualifying individuals. A person with a felony or misdemeanor conviction can apply online and if the conviction meets the new eligibility criteria, a Clean Slate Program attorney will assist with the expungement. The attorney will file a notarized application with the court and a hearing will be scheduled. The individual will not have to pay for the attorney’s services or for any of the court fees. The attorney will attend the court hearing with the qualifying individual and request the conviction be set aside. If granted, the conviction will no longer appear on the individual’s public criminal record.
