Spring is finally here!  And with the joy of fresh air, chirping birds and green grass so too comes graduation season.  It seems every year we read about graduation-related tragedies like catastrophic injuries due to drunk driving, sexual assaults, alcohol poisoning of minors, violent acts due to intoxication and, in some cases, even death.  State law and many local ordinances prohibit serving alcohol to minors.  As a homeowner or adult furnishing the alcohol to a minor, you can be prosecuted criminally and sued civilly for money damages.  Read More→

 

Recent Legislation Provides Relief to Garnishee Defendants

On April 15, 2015, Governor Snyder signed into legislation a new law that provides significant relief to garnishee defendants.  The new law requires judgment creditors to provide written notice to remind garnishee defendants that they are not in compliance before a default is entered against them.  Read More→

 

Municipal Environmental Law 101

Municipal attorneys must be jack-of-all-trades.  One of the trades they must now undertake is environmental law.  I recently spoke at the winter meeting of the Michigan Local Government Managers Association about some basic municipal environmental law issues.  A principal issue in municipal environmental law is old gas stations.  Another issue is contaminated sites from legacy industries.  Read More→
